Caryn
Heilman
Caryn is thrilled to be a founding member of this dynamically governed association with its lateral, non-hierarchical model so fitting for Continuum. She first began doing Continuum in a hands-on healing study group in the mid-80s, and was mentored by Emilie for 20 years midway through her 10 year modern dance career with the Paul Taylor Dance Company.
She served as Vice President of the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association for a term, and on the advisory board of SOMAFest L.A where she teaches annually.
She founded LiquidBody media, movement and dance in 2001 and teaches Continuum in person in New York, Athens, Greece and holds an annual LiquidBody Continuum retreat on an island in Greece at Bouros Seaview Retreat (and wherever she has student interest).
She co-teaches a monthly Continuum Virtual with Teri Carter and is on the faculty of Teri’s Somatic Movement Arts. Through LiquidBody movement, Caryn offers ongoing virtual classes and monthly workshops to students around the globe including New Zealand, Australia, Finland, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Capetown, Canada and more.
She has an MFA in Somatic Dance and Technology from the University of California, Irvine and is on faculty at School of Visual Arts in NYC.
With her multi-instrumentalist, composer wife, Nana Simopoulos, she creates dance film and audience-interactive multimedia performance works, and also collaborates regularly with Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger on media art installations.
She mentors Continuum teachers and is so grateful to the worldwide Continuum community who has supported and participated in the development of the work all these years.
